Analysis
Price structure
We compared room prices of 13 different, randomly selected hotels in China. However, we made sure that all hotel ranges are represented. In other words, we included high-end hotels as well as budget rooms into our comparison. We further selected hotels in different areas (big cities, tourist spots and countryside areas).
When looking at the total price of all 13 rooms in China, the result of the five analyzed online travel agencies (OTA) is similar. The difference between the lowest total (booking.com) and the highest total (Expedia) is 5% only.
However, when having a look at a specific hotel room only, we recognized heavy price differences between the OATs. In one case, the offer between the lowest price (Trip.com) and the highest price (Expedia) was 80%.
We further learned that there is no hotel booking site which always provides the cheapest deal. Room prices at hotel chains are normally identical. However, sometimes a special deal pops up at only some of the hotel booking sites.
Assortments
Compared to the other analyzed hotel booking sites, Trip.com seems to clearly have the most hotels in their Chinese portfolio. That’s not really a surprise since China is the homeland of Trip.com. For the places we have analyzed, the hotel assortment on Trip.com is two times higher compared to Booking.com/Agoda and even 4 times higher compared to Expedia/Hotels.com
Reviews
Trip.com is the international booking site of Ctrip, one of the most popular booking sites for Chinese. Trip.com includes the hotel reviews of Ctrip. Therefore it’s obvious that Trip.com outranks the other OATs when comparing the number of reviews.
Conclusion
In terms of prices, no OAT can be selected as a winner. However, in terms of assortments and reviews, Trip.com clearly outranks the other four OATs. Especially thanks to a much bigger pool of hotel choices, we rank Trip.com as the best hotel booking site for China.

- Use a metasearch engine (for example hotelscombined.com) to check whether some better deals are available for this specific hotel
